Some confusion exists as to whether godparents have legal rights; they do not.
The role of the godparent is a spiritual one, without any legal obligations, responsibilities or rights. A parent may request in their Will that the godparents become legal carers should the parent die. In making the decision of who becomes the legal guardian of a child, the Court will always consider what is in the best interests of that child.
